We’re in the middle of a meaning-making epoch that we haven’t seen since the invention of the Gutenberg Press. For the first time in human history, everyone has all the world’s information in their pockets. Generative AI means people can share at warp speed. This influx of information is disorienting, and people crave to understand what it all means.

Meaning-making is the process of pointing people to what matters, explaining what it means, and telling them what to do about it.

This is a huge opportunity for communicators working toward justice, fairness and a thriving planet. When events disrupt what people thought they knew, communicators have an opportunity to help people understand what happened, why it matters and what it says about the world around them. But if we don’t seize it, meaning-makers who would rather sow distrust, fear and hate will win out. In other words, our Gutenberg moment could lead to the next Spanish Inquisition instead of the Great Enlightenment.

Spitfire Strategies is on a journey to learn and share emerging and best practices of meaning-making in these times. We are gathering examples, testing approaches and sharing insights with communicators. We look forward to continuing to learn together and uncover ways to do effective meaning-making
