Contraceptive access fund
Power to Decide
Power to Decide wanted their contraceptive access fund to make a big impact. Created to help women in parts of the United States without ready access to contraceptives get the birth control they need and want, the fund needed exposure – and contributions.
At least 19.5 million women in United States who need publicly funded contraception live in contraceptive deserts —counties without reasonable access to the full range of contraceptive methods. That means millions of women live in the difficult circumstance of having to not only navigate direct cost barriers to contraception, but also associated transportation costs, child care costs, and unpaid time off work.
Power to Decide launched the contraceptive access fund to support women’s power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child. The fund helps women with low incomes overcome barriers in access to contraception, such as transportation, taking time off work or securing child care during a trip to the clinic.
Power to Decide partnered with Spitfire to put together a comprehensive social media and email campaign to fill the Fund during the crucial holiday giving season starting in November, leading up to Giving Tuesday and carrying through to the New Year. We set to work sourcing creative art, developing engaging copy and offering extensive strategy and expertise to help Power to Decide share the Contraceptive Access Fund with their audience and get the support they need.
Spitfire worked with Design Action Collective to create a powerful campaign image for use in social and email outreach, which Power to Decide also offered as a poster to incentivize gifts to the fund. We created their easy-to-remember donor site url (powertodecide.org/ProtectBC) and created a detailed social and email outreach calendar and workplan, marking specific days for posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We drafted copy for Power to Decide to use – so they could spend more time promoting the campaign to donors and less time writing tweets. We also created influencer and corporate partner toolkits to help Power to Decide’s allies and advocates easily share the fund with their audiences. Finally, we helped Power to Decide identify potential birth control champions to reach out to and ask to advocate for the fund in future efforts. The contraceptive access fund launched just before Giving Tuesday, and Power to Decide experienced a tenfold increase in donations from 2018 to 2019 and was shared dozens of times by supporters on Facebook and Twitter.
Spitfire hopes to continue our work on this important issue with partners dedicated to helping everyone access contraceptives, no matter where they live.
